“But when you pray, go into your most private room, close the door, and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you.” MATTHEW 6:6 AMP

When Jesus taught the crowds how to pray, he encouraged them to go into their most private room, close the door, and pray. I kind of imagine that “private room” as a bedroom closet today. It’s that place where we can be alone with God, and no one—not even a roaming toddler, a ringing phone, distractions, or dirty laundry—will find us!

As you continue to be intentional about being present in the present, I encourage you to make a space—in your home or even just in your heart—to spend time with God. If you can jet off to a tropical location for a spiritual getaway, do it! But all of us can choose to make room, right where we are, to be with God. Maybe it literally is your bedroom closet. There were seasons of my life when my space was sitting in my carOr maybe you can find quiet space at a park or at the library.

Consider doing something special in that space you create to spend time with God. If your only option is to lock the bathroom door to keep everyone out, place a scented candle in there to create some ambiance.

Make room – physically and emotionally – to be with God in this season.

Get in the physical space you’re creating and dedicate it to God. Get quiet and journal your conversation with God.

Father God, I long to be in Your presence. Please meet me in the physical space I’ve created to be with You, and communicate to my heart. Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening. Amen.
