And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. PHILIPPIANS 1:6 ESV

“How did I end up here?”

Sometimes we have the very best of intentions to get someplace in our lives or accomplish something or achieve a thing, and it just doesn’t happen. Then we wake up one morning and say, “I have no idea how I ended up here.” I think I might know how it happened.

I call this phenomenon, this ending up far from where we’d hoped or imagined,  “the drift.” You feel me? Without ever intending to change directions, the experiences of life—our circumstances, the people around us, the choices we make, the influences we allow—can shift our course. We never made a decision to change course, and yet we wake up and notice that we are not where we imagined we’d be.

If that’s you, you’re not alone. And I’m going to name this moment as your opportunity to notice the drift and make a decision today to pivot. I’m not talking about just desiring your life to be different. I’m asking you to make a decision today to take steps to live a life you love.

Look for the drift! Consider all the areas of your life—family, friendships, work, education, leisure, faith—and identify the places where you’ve drifted. Then write out the decision you’re making today to get back on course.

God, I believe that You intend to finish the good work You’ve begun in my life. Give me courage to follow through on the decision I am making today to stay on course. Amen.
