What to Say to the Insecure

She could see it on her daughter’s face as she peered into the mirror. In frustration, the teen slammed the brush down on the counter. “What’s the point?” she snarled. “No matter what I do, I’m still fat and ugly!” she shouted as she stormed off to her room.

Clearly, she wasn’t seeing the same image her mother saw when she looked at her beautiful girl. How can her perception of herself be so off? the mother wondered as she made her way to console her child.

But if she’s honest, the mother would admit she suffers similar insecurities. Feelings of inadequacy, unworthiness, and even rejection simmer beneath a more sophisticated façade, surfacing only in her most vulnerable moments.

What do both mother and daughter need to know to set their souls free? How can we, as God’s children and the body of Christ, help to bolster other believers in the midst of their insecurities? As always, our Savior saves the day. His words of identity and belonging, beauty and purpose can tear through the masks we wear to work true healing where the deepest wounds lie. Let’s point each other to the peace of mind that comes as we realize our identity in Him.
