What to Say That Builds Faith

“They’re getting a divorce!” the young teen announced to her Bible study small group, her face full of anger. But as she explained, her strong façade cracked, and tears trickled down her face. “Where is the Lord now?” she asked, desperate for an answer. “Why isn’t He doing anything to stop this?”
It’s easy to talk about faith and trust when we’re simply studying truths in a safe and comfortable environment. But when the rug gets ripped out from underneath us—when our whole world is reeling off-course—our faith comes under fire. Is God really in control? Is He really good? Does He care at all about me?
Doubts and questions fill our minds and threaten to drown the connection with God we thought was so strong. Satan loves to come in at these moments of weakness to keep us submerged in our despair until our faith dies altogether.
But our Savior is stronger than evil, and His love great enough to buoy a floundering faith. We just need to remind each other of Him, of the truth, when we’re in life’s trenches. As we lift each other up, setting our gaze back on God’s immutable character, we rediscover just how mighty He is to save—again and again.
Life-Giving Words for Building Faith
For we walk by faith, not by sight. II CORINTHIANS 5:7
Even though it doesn’t make sense to the watching world, God is working out a plan so great we can’t even imagine it. But we can trust and follow Him!
Immediately the father of the boy cried out, “I do believe; help my unbelief!” MARK 9:24
There’s no need to cover up your fears and doubts because God knows about them anyway. Just ask Him for help, and He’ll graciously give you the faith you need.
“And if you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” MATTHEW 21:22
I’m believing with you that God will provide the resources we requested of Him.
My speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of wisdom but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not be based on human wisdom but on God’s power. I CORINTHIANS 2:4–5
When you spoke up today and shared from your heart, I really heard the Lord speaking to me through you. Thank you for being vulnerable.
Now without faith it is impossible to please God, since the one who draws near to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him. HEBREWS 11:6
Don’t give up seeking the Lord. He promises to reward us when we continue to press in to know and understand His heart.
