The Work Of Rest

On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation. Genesis 2:2-3 NLT

Busy is the new fine. The standard answer to “How are you?” used to be “Fine.” But today when people are asked how they are, the answer is usually “Busy!” followed by empathetic nods. We’ve moved from giving an emotional response with a smile to giving a physical response with a sigh. Our fast-paced world values activity and productivity, but God made our bodies to rest. We also need rest for our souls and minds. A mom’s life is in constant motion, and sometimes the only way you’ll have time to rest is if you make that time. God wants that for you because He loves you and knows what is best for you.

God knows everything that you are juggling right now, and He longs for you to rest and receive His renewal. Discovering ways to embrace His example and align your values with His can be an empowering journey. Consider embarking on your own version of a rejuvenating “seventh day” rest, allowing yourself a regular, well-deserved break from the busyness of life. That may not look like taking Sundays off, which is often impossible as a mom, but it could look like expressing a desire and a willingness to be intentional. And then ask God to help you lay out a plan. Rest can be as simple as an afternoon nap or an early morning cup of coffee at the table. It can be a walk in the evening or an agreement with your children that there will be a quiet time with books for an hour after lunch.

Whatever works for your family, the Lord will help you sort it out because your rest matters to Him too. When you invite Him, God will join you in rest and give you a quiet heart.
