The Source

Self-help—it’s everywhere. Just enter a bookstore, get online, or have a chat with some girlfriends and you’re bound to encounter something: a book, an article, a post or meme . . . feeling good is always on trend!

We know God desires us to live vibrant lives, and we can’t bring sunshine to others if we’re always walking around under a cloud of our own. But some self-help sources are a lot more “unicorns and rainbows” and a lot less “real life,” as much as we hate to admit it. All the positive thinking in the world will not change the fact that people struggle, and difficult things happen and some days we just feel like we need a do-over (or ten!).

Praise the Lord for that one, eternal, go-to guide that we can always count on to tell us the whole truth, that shares the light but never denies the darkness—His Word. We may each be drawn to a particular translation, and we all have different ways of learning and applying what we discover, but the truth in those pages is available to every one of us and has the power to change us from the inside out in a way that no trend, guru, or best seller ever will.

His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. —Psalm 1:2 ESV

For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword.—Hebrews 4:12 NIV

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. —II Timothy 3:16–17 NKJV
