Grow Toward the Light

From the pages of Proverbs, wisdom beckons to us: “Absorb God’s truth. Don’t turn away. Open up and take it in.” As much as flowers need sunlight for their growth, we need the focused truth of God’s Word for ours. Every bit as much. It’s like sunshine to our souls when a plant is positioned properly in a window sill.

Anyone who doesn’t bother to open their Bible misses it all, including the boost of spiritual nutrients that accompanies exposure to the light of God’s Word.

While we absorb the principles, promises, commands, and priorities of Scripture, the Holy Spirit illuminates our hearts and minds, converting those words into good works and love for others. By this divine form of photosynthesis, we grow more lovely and loving, more sturdy and strong over time.

Not only is the Word of God health and life to our bones, but it fortifies us for life “outdoors,” in the real world. Philippians 2:14-16 (MESSAGE) says that by conducting ourselves as children of God, we will “go out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society,” providing people with “a glimpse of good living and of the living God.”

The more of God and His Word that we take in, the more of God and His love we will be able to breathe out. Photosynthesis is a beautiful thing.

My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. (Proverbs 4:20-22 NLT)

Your Words breathe life into my being. Grant me a fresh love of Your Word.
