Beautiful Fluff

The righteous hate what is false, but the wicked make themselves a stench and bring shame on themselves.

Proverbs 13:5 NIV

Anyone who has ever been around a cottonwood tree in early summer knows that white, ethereal fluff will soon begin wafting whimsically on the soft summer breeze. The female trees produce the fruit of the cottonwood in the form of a seed surrounded by a substance that looks like cotton, hence the name of the tree. Cottonwood trees are a beautiful sight to behold—unless you’re an allergy sufferer.

In the age of electronic media, now available on every type of device imaginable, we are bombarded with all manner of news, like a rainfall of beautiful fluff, attempting to take root in our hearts. As believers, it is our responsibility to compare what we hear with the Word of God. The Bible is our standard to follow, to guide us into a right life with Him. But the fluff of the world is not worthy of a redeemed heart. The fluff of the world is only fit for the earth from which the tree sprang up.

FAITH CHECK

To avoid becoming the stuff of fluff, we must guard our hearts daily by studying the Word of God. If we know what is real, we will have no problem recognizing what isn’t.
