Awakenings

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a newborn baby? Yes, I know we were all one of those once, but I mean, if we could be inside the brain of a newborn and watch the fireworks?

Everything in an infant’s world is a first. Scientists have reported that by the time a baby is three years old, his or her brain, which had one hundred billion neurons at birth, has increased to some one hundred trillion connections. All those colors, sounds, faces, smells, tastes, and words must feel like miniature awakenings bursting at the speed of microwave popcorn.

The Holy Spirit makes baby Christians just as capable of being awakened to all that life in Christ entails. We’re supernaturally equipped to grow by leaps and bounds from the moment of new birth. And with nurturing, we will.

God’s Word offers a lifetime supply of both milk and meat, ensuring that we’re nourished at every stage of development. Also, He has appointed the community of faith to come alongside us in discipleship and friendship, and the Holy Spirit to spur on and complete what God has started.

If you’re new to this thing called faith, be sure to feed on God’s Word every day and get connected with a mature group of Christians who will not only encourage your growth but help it along. Both those things made a huge difference for me.

Jesus said, “The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life” (John 6:63). Peter the apostle assured us that we’ve been given everything we need for life and godliness.

We have all of this so that we might not only grow, but grow up good and strong!

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature. II PETER 1:3–4

Holy Spirit, keep me growing, and growing strong, so that once I’m grown up, I will resemble You.
