And Then God Created Romance

Then Boaz said to his young man who was in charge of the reapers, “Whose young woman is this?” And the servant who was in charge of the reapers answered, “She is the young Moabite woman, who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves after the reapers.’ So she came, and she has continued from early morning until now, except for a short rest.” RUTH 2:5–7 ESV

Everyone loves the part in books and movies when the heroine meets the hero. There may be a spark of something between them—whether ire or amusement or attraction or all the above. Yes, some “chemistry” happens between them. The story takes off from there, and we are happy to be on that ride. Why? Because romantic love is built into the essence of who we are. God made romance—that precious and profound and mysterious awakening and heart-intermingling that God created between a man and a woman. Ah, yes, the stuff of sweet imaginings and poetry and finally, wedding bells.

In this scene, see Boaz taking note of the young woman in his field—Ruth. We don’t know Boaz’s thoughts, but we cannot help but imagine him blinking a few times and suddenly thinking, “Wow, who is that young woman in my field!”

Can you imagine this scene in a movie? But before Boaz talks to Ruth, he wisely decides to gather some information about her. And Boaz’s field foreman is happy to offer what he knows.

Don’t we wish we had many more details surrounding these scenes? This ancient account of Ruth and Boaz is one of the most significant biblical love stories of all time. Except, of course, for one other—and that is the love story between God and humanity. Or on a more personal note, the love story between God and you!

Dear Lord, I am so grateful for the love You have for me. I love You too. With all my heart and soul! Amen.
