“God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.” Matthew 5:6
When Jesus gave his Sermon on the Mount, he began with blessings. Matthew used the Greek word makarios, which can be translated as “blessed” or “happy.” Happiness comes as we seek after God and want what he wants. Put differently, living happily comes about when we long to please him and are doing exactly what he created us to do. He calls us to love (John 13:34), seek his justice (Micah 6:8), and make disciples (Matthew 28:19). Happiness comes when we do what he asks of us. Here is a test worth taking: Meet everyone around you with love, meet the needy with justice, and meet the lost with hope. If your heart is in line with the Lord’s, you will be energized and filled by God’s blessings on you.
When the problems that trouble you now aren’t solved right away, you can still trust God that relief is coming. Justice will be served. God’s timetable includes both this age and the age to come. We have a tendency toward “microwave faith”: We expect instant results from God for our concerns. But God often operates as a slow cooker, requiring us to believe in what he has promised and trust while we wait. What are you aching for? Where have you not yet seen God at work for victory? Submit it to him again today, and trust what Jesus said about justice in the Sermon on the Mount. He did not say “might” or “may” or “should.” He said “will.”
Whenever you doubt, lean into the many promises of God in Scripture, and you will be encouraged.
