Daily devotion

“This is a day to remember. Each year, from generation to generation, you must celebrate it as a special festival to the Lord. This is a law for all time.” Exodus 12:14
What child doesn’t love having a birthday? Birthdays are a time when we celebrate the person God has created and remember the years they have lived. The parties and cakes reflect who they are at that time. But birthdays are also a time for parents to rejoice in God’s gift of that child and to look back on the day they welcomed that child into their family.
The festivals God called the Israelites to observe were to be a remembrance of his nearness and faithfulness to them. A birthday is a day of remembrance too. Every year, we can recall how God changed and helped us as parents, even as we are calling attention to the age milestones of our children. A child is a gift from God. Our loving Father wants us to experience the incredible joy of parental love too (Psalm 127:3).
What other “days to remember” have you established in your life and family? Perhaps a relative immigrated many years ago or another started the family business, and you can recall those anniversaries. Maybe you remember the very moment that you accepted Christ as your Savior and Lord. Maybe you want to remember a day of sobriety or the day someone you loved very much passed away. When you remember those milestones and people with gratitude and rejoicing, you are acknowledging the Lord’s faithfulness to you and your family. Even the hard anniversaries can be gifts to your heart and soul as you deliberately bring them before God.
Every single part of your past, present, and future belongs to God, and he longs to share every bit of it with you.
