“I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.” Genesis12:2

Imagine hearing a word straight from God to you— “Your descendants will be a great nation”—not one time but three separate times! Now imagine that you’re in your nineties with no children. What would you believe? Would you lean into God’s promise, or would you trust the reality in front of your eyes? That’s what Abram and Sarai faced (Genesis 12:1-2, 7; 15:1-6; 17:1–18:33; 21:1-2).

God’s promise to Abram and Sarai—renamed Abraham and Sarah when God made the covenant with them—was a big one.

Believing such a thing would be downright laughable. In fact, Sarah did laugh when she heard! They named their son Isaac, which means “he laughs” (Genesis 21:6). God brought laughter along with the fulfillment of his promise. But what a long road of waiting, trusting, hoping, and believing for something huge. Abraham and Sarah did not always wait faithfully (see Hagar’s story in Genesis 16). But in the end, God was faithful. He loved Abraham and Sarah enough to keep his promise. He loves you that much too.

It can be so hard to wait—in the waiting room, in the traffic jam, for the call with news about a diagnosis—even when we’re waiting on God.

Eventually, we’ll look back and see that the Lord was right by our side the whole time. But what about while we’re waiting? We can trust that the God of the universe is invested in his relationship with us. He cares enough to hear the cries of our hearts and seek us out in the right time. God’s voice, character, and faithfulness are constant and unchanging. Laugh at the impossibilities if you need to. But remember: The joy-filled laughter that comes with answered promises is a gift straight from God.

God longs for you to know him, trust him, and experience all the joy and peace that you need for today.
