“The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” Exodus 14:14

How long is your to-do list today? If you’re like many moms, you often feel overwhelmed and under accomplished, wondering how other moms do it and wishing you had a few extra arms or even a clone of yourself! We tend to place a high value on “getting things done” instead of “letting things be.” Those dishes in the sink shout your name even as your little one is asking for a round of hide- and-seek. Which one is likely to get your attention first? Not that our tasks are wrong; we are called to run our homes well. But being aware of what tugs on our hearts can help us to make wise decisions in peace.

Just as your little one desires your attention and affection, your own heart needs the attention and affection of your Father. When you feel overwhelmed, it may be because you need personal time with the Lord—time in prayer, in quiet, with reminders that you don’t have to accomplish things to earn his love.

When we tie success to tasks, we may forget about the strength and willingness of our Father. The Israelites needed that reminder as the Egyptians closed in and water lapped at their toes. Surely, they would not get out of this one! But Moses reminded them that God is in control. God would do the fighting, and they needed to remain calm. They needed to be still so they could watch what God was about to do. The waters parted just in time, everyone made it through, and the threat was washed away. You, too, are in the Father’s sights. When you feel threatened by the weight of responsibility, remember to stay calm and allow God to do his work.

Your sense of responsibility is a gift from the Lord. He will help direct your steps with all the grace you need.
