“What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father Knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31

Moms know their children. They know each birthmark, freckle, and crooked tooth. Moms can pick their children out in a crowd. Their babies’ cries are all completely distinct. Moms know what will make their children laugh and when they’re about to cry. But most moms have never numbered their children’s hairs. Insurmountable! Unthinkable! So while we brush their hair into braids and mohawks, we can remember that there is one who loves our children even more than we do. God knows his plans for them. He knows every inch of their being, right down to the number of hairs on their heads. That’s not just any ordinary kind of love; that’s a love that can be trusted.

As you love your children with a depth you didn’t know was possible before you had them, it is easy to relate that love to how God loves you. Your heart aches when your child experiences sorrow, and you wonder if God’s heart ever aches for you. Your heart bursts when your child does something exceedingly well, and you wonder if God’s heart ever bursts for you. Oh, yes. And so much more. If you love one child with intensity, multiply that by at least a million for how much God loves you. If he takes the time to count your hairs and to watch over a single sparrow who needs help, you never have to worry about being left alone and afraid.

Just as a loving father watches his daughter on the playground, so God’s fatherly eye is on you.
