Worry is a heavy burden, but a kind word always brings cheer.” PROVERBS 12:25 CEV

Misery is an isolator. It fools you into thinking if you can’t get rid of your problems, you may as well wallow in them. But that’s not the fun kind of playing in the dirt. Still, you throw a not-fun pity party, cannonball into the muck, and give yourself gifts of anxiety, fear, loneliness, and pain. No one comes to the party, but no wonder. It’s not very joyous.

Until someone finally shows up. They didn’t bring a gift, but they say you look nice in your party hat. Your lips curve up slightly. How sweet it is to smile again! You say thanks—with only a little moroseness—and now you’re having a pleasant conversation with this kind soul who has buoyed your spirit. Their being there has cheered you up.

What a difference it makes when people simply show up for us. In our moments of pain, worry, and pity, companionship is the best medicine. Someone who says, “I see what you’re going through, and I’m sorry. I wish I could help make it okay. I love you, and I’m here for you right now.” It’s ironic how words that carry so much weight can feel so instantly uplifting.

That’s because there’s power in presence. Coming alongside someone who is hurting is like soothing salve on an angry wound. God sends us help and comfort in our times of need so we can help others with the same care and comfort that He gives us (II Corinthians 1:4). We don’t need to have all the answers or immediately begin fixing. We can simply be there. We can share an uplifting word. Even on our gloomy days, we’ll be surprised at how encouraging someone else makes us feel cheerful. No one likes a pity party. Let’s take encouragement from the Lord and go crash some.

God, thank You for encouraging me when I feel down. Help me not to wallow in my pity, but to trust You and help others just as You help me. Amen.
