The Christ Candle

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life." John 8:12 NLT

If you are using an advent wreath, light the purple candle of hope, the purple candle of love, the pink candle of joy, the purple candle of peace, and the white Christ candle. Notice how five candles bring greater light than four.

Jesus is the light of the world.

Metaphors make complex ideas easier to understand. Metaphors describe, compare, or symbolize something, someone, or an action. Jesus uses metaphors throughout His teaching by way of parables. He makes it easy for us to understand by using the tangible and the common. I always remind myself that God is infinite, and I am finite—I am limited by time, space and matter—He is not. So, there is no way I can fully comprehend an infinite God with a finite mind. And that is just the way I want it. If I could completely understand God, He would not be God, would He?

Good news, there are beautiful metaphors for Jesus. You can find these in the book of John. John records the ‘I am’ statements of Jesus’ teachings.

I Am the Bread of Life: (John 6).

I Am the Light of the World: (John 8).

I Am the Gate of the Sheepfold: (John 10).

I Am the Good Shepherd: (John 10).

I Am the Resurrection and the Life: (John 11).

I Am the Way, Truth, and Life: (John 14)

I Am the True Vine: (John 15)

This week as you clear the wrapping paper, wash a million dishes, and get ready for the new year, steal a few minutes away and discover Who JESUS says He is.

Merry Christmas
Candace
