Taking Tomorrow for Granted

Don’t brag about tomorrow, since you don’t know what the day will bring.
PROVERBS 27:1 NLT

These are the words of perhaps the wisest man who ever lived. When Solomon became king of Israel, God promised to give him anything he wanted. Solomon asked for wisdom. In the book of Proverbs, he shares some of that wisdom: don’t treat tomorrow as a given. It’s a simple reminder, but one with enormous implications. His today-first approach to life can transform our relationships, among other things. It motivates us to resolve conflict instead of holding on to grudges. It inspires us to share our feelings, knowing that we may not be able to do it later. It helps us guard against procrastination. It encourages us to think hard about our priorities, to decide what’s immediately important. And it focuses our attention on God, the Source and Sustainer of life. He knows exactly how many days we’ll spend in this world—and how we can make the most of every
one of them.

God, thank You for reminding me how essential it is to make the most of today.
When life gets busy, it’s tempting to postpone important things until another day. It’s also tempting to assume that I have plenty of time to do the things I need—and want—to do. But I know all too well that that’s not always the case—that tomorrow is guaranteed to no one. So help me
prioritize the things that are truly important.

Give me the focus and perseverance to accomplish what I need to do today.

AMEN.
