Not a Morning Person

I know how you’re feeling. The world today is over-the-top intense. The news is depressing, social media is soul-sucking, and godless filth is swirling around us like a flushing toilet bowl. Therefore, it’s fair to say that “joy” is simply for naive absent-minded people who don’t live in reality, right?! Goodness gracious.

Here is what I’ve learned. The most powerful thing we can do, especially in today’s world, is to embrace the joy of the Lord. It’s where our strength, endurance, and fortitude comes from. The presence of joy brings light, and where there is light, it is impossible for darkness to exist.

Not a Morning Person

This is the day the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. PSALM 118:24 NLT

When I first got married, my poor husband had no idea how much his new wife could sleep. And when I say sleep, I mean sleep. could throw down about fifteen hours of uninterrupted triple z’s with zero problem. It was impressive, I must admit. Borderline unhealthy but definitely impressive.

With that being said, I was never a morning person. If anyone tried to wake me up earlier than necessary, I’d emerge as an eye-booger monster with horrifying bed head and dragon-like halitosis. There was never anything attractive to me about rising before the sun; so when people talked about getting up early for quiet time with God, that was a hard no for me.

Obviously, life changes those cycles. Sleep schedules shift after having babies, rest patterns lessen with adulting responsibilities, and overly late nights became a thing of the past. The more I matured as a woman and the hungrier I became toward the things of God, I started to understand the value of being a morning person.

Three verses stand out to me the most:

Psalm 118:24. “This is the day the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!” (NLT). This verse encourages me to look forward to mornings rather than dread them, because each day is a gift from God.

Lamentations 3:22–23. “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (ESV). This verse gives me hope for a better day despite how bad the day was before.

Matthew 6:33. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (KJV). This verse encourages me to reserve time with Him each day before anything else—before breakfast, work, or phone scrolling.

Rather than dreading mornings or having a constant case of “the Mondays,” mornings have become a treasure. Now, my quiet time with Jesus is the most rejuvenating part of my day. No matter what your schedule looks like, carve out time for the One who loves you most!

God, thank You for each day. My desire is to always set aside time for You. Amen.
