How to Battle the Winter Blues

AS WINTER UNFOLDS, bringing with it shorter days, colder temperatures, and sometimes a less colorful world outside our windows (especially once the Christmas season has passed), it’s common to experience what is often referred to as the “winter blues.” While it’s natural to miss the sun and warmth, we can find comfort, joy, and hope in our Lord, Jesus Christ during these chilly months.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 ESV
The winter blues, characterized by feelings of sadness, fatigue, and a lack of motivation, can be challenging. However, as believers, we’re gifted with the ultimate source of hope and joy—our relationship with Christ. Here are some tips on how to lean into your faith to beat the winter blues.
01 // Dive Deeper into Scripture: The Bible is a treasure trove of encouragement, wisdom, and love letters from God. Immerse yourself in His word. Let Scriptures like Psalm 16:11 NIV, “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand,” guide your winter days. You could start a morning quiet time ritual, settling down next to a window that provides natural light or you can tuck yourself into a cozy space with just your Bible.
02 // Practice Gratitude: Even on the coldest days, there are blessings around us, such as: a tiny, perfect snowflake pressed onto your window before it melts; a warm mug of your favorite coffee first thing in the morning; a call out of the blue from a friend you haven’t talked to in a while; your favorite hearty dinner and a movie in with your family. These blessings do not have to be huge, life-changing events, just things that make you stop and take a breath of gratitude. Practice gratitude by keeping a journal and listing three things you’re grateful for each day. Remember 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
03 // Embrace Prayer & Meditation: Prayer is a powerful tool, and meditation on God’s word can bring comfort and clarity. Start your day with a prayer, inviting God’s joy into your heart. Meditate on Scriptures that speak of joy and peace. Get some note cards and write your favorite Scriptures and prayers on them so you can place them around your house, in your office, in your car, on your mirror, or anywhere you know you will see them throughout the day. These notes can provide lightness when you feel down.
04 // Stay Connected: Winter can often feel isolating, but remember, we are called to live in community. Reach out to friends, join a Bible study group, or volunteer. As Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV reminds us, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another…” Reach out to family you haven’t caught up with in a while, join a new Bible study at church, help out in your community, or start a book club with a group of friends. Surround yourself with community that will lift you and encourage you, and it will bring new energy into those days that feel lonely.
05 // Care for Your Physical Health: Our physical health can greatly impact our mental well-being. Try to maintain a balanced diet, engage in regular exercise (a brisk walk in the winter air can be invigorating), and ensure you’re getting enough sleep. Remind yourself with 1 Corinthians 6:19 NIV: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”
06 // Create & Celebrate: Expressing ourselves creatively can be therapeutic. Whether it’s painting, writing, baking, or knitting, find something that brings you joy and dedicate time to it. Celebrate small victories and accomplishments— a cheerful heart is indeed good medicine (Proverbs 17:22). The chilly winter months are a perfect time to pick up an old hobby or try a new one that can provide something to look forward to at the end of a long day.
Lastly, remember that it’s OK to have days when the winter blues seem overwhelming. Reach out to someone you trust, share your feelings, and pray together. As Romans 15:13 NIV says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” With God’s love and grace, we can navigate through the winter season with a heart full of hope and joy.
