Abide

Life seems busier than ever these days, don’t you think? The world constantly demands our attention, with new challenges, trends, and distractions. Amid this whirlwind, many people are yearning for something grounding—a firm foundation that keeps them steady. Of course, that firm foundation is the steadying and constant presence of Christ in your life.

Choosing “abide” as your word for the year offers a powerful reminder to dwell in God’s presence, relying on His strength, peace, and guidance rather than our own. This article will explore what it truly means to abide in Christ, how to integrate it into your life throughout 2025, and key Scriptures that can help you stay focused and steadfast in your walk with God.

What Does it Mean to Abide in Christ?

To “abide” in Christ means to remain closely connected to Him. This idea of abiding goes beyond simply believing in Jesus; it speaks of a relationship marked by running back to the Father again and again, trusting in Him through all circumstances. In John 15:4, Jesus uses the metaphor of a vine and branches to illustrate this deep connection:

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” (John 15:4, ESV)

When we abide in Christ, we draw our spiritual sustenance from Him. Just as a branch connected to the vine receives life and nourishment, so do we receive strength, wisdom, and love when we stay connected to Jesus. Abiding is not a one-time act; it’s a continual process that involves prioritizing time with God, remaining in His love, and relying on His grace daily.

So How Can You Abide in Him in 2025?

Choosing "abide" as your word of the year is a commitment to cultivating a life deeply rooted in Christ. Here’s how you can embrace it in practical ways:

1. Start Your Day with Intentional Time in God’s Presence

Abiding begins with setting aside time each day to be still before God. Rather than approaching God with a long list of prayer requests, spend time listening and resting in His presence. This could be through reading Scripture, prayer, or quiet meditation. In Psalm 46:10, we are reminded to,

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

This verse encourages us to stop striving, to let go, and to remember that God is in control. Starting your day by abiding in Christ allows you to face whatever comes with a peaceful, steady heart.

2. Anchor Your Heart and Mind in Scripture

When we allow Scripture to become a part of our daily lives, it becomes easier to stay connected to Christ even amid challenges. Memorizing verses that remind you to abide can help ground you in moments of stress or anxiety. Consider focusing on passages such as John 15, where Jesus discusses the importance of abiding in Him, or Philippians 4:13, which reassures us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Meditating on these Scriptures throughout the year keeps you aligned with God’s truth.

3. Practice Dependence on God Daily

Abiding in Christ requires that we give up self-reliance and instead learn to depend on God in all things. This may involve surrendering your plans, seeking God’s guidance in decisions, and trusting Him with the unknowns in life. Proverbs 3:5-6 urges us to,

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

This reliance on God is foundational to abiding; as you go through 2025, lean on His wisdom rather than your own.

4. Reflect and Journal on Your Abiding Journey

Keeping a journal to document your spiritual journey can help you see the fruit of abiding in Christ over time. As you record answered prayers, moments of God’s faithfulness, and personal growth, you’ll see tangible evidence of God’s presence in your life. This practice reinforces the habit of abiding and allows you to look back at how God has been at work, even in difficult seasons.

5. Seek Community for Encouragement and Growth

In John 15:12, Jesus calls His followers to “love one another as I have loved you.” Abiding in Christ is often a communal journey where we encourage and strengthen one another. Seek out a small group, Bible study, or trusted friends who can pray for you, encourage you, and hold you accountable in your walk with Christ.

Scriptures to Focus on Throughout the Year

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. JOHN 15:4-5 ESV

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. COLOSSIANS 2:6-7 NLT

Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. I JOHN 4:15-16 ESV

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you. JOHN 15:7 CSB

But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.
ISAIAH 40:31 NLT

As you journey throughout 2025 and beyond, remember that abiding is not about striving harder, but about truly resting in Christ’s love. Abiding in Christ allows God to work in and through you, producing fruit and blessings that brings glory to Him. When the hard times come, and we know that they will, you can return to the foundations that you’ve built through abiding in Him – whether it be through prayer, Scripture, community – and watch as God brings peace to your heart.

May this be the year that you learn to dwell richly in God’s presence, finding strength, wisdom, and love that equips you to face each day with a heart that is grounded in Him.
