As anyone who has attended one of his marriage conferences knows, Dr. Gary Chapman’s expertise in marriage begins with the success and failures he and his wife Karolyn have experienced in their marriage for more than 45 years. He is just the man to turn to for help on improving or healing our most important relationships. His own life experiences, plus over thirty-five years of pastoring and marriage counseling, led him to publish his first book in the Love Language series, The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts. Many of the millions of readers credit this continual New York Times bestseller with saving their marriages by showing them simple and practical ways to communicate love.
In a sentence or two, what would you say is the central message of your work?
There are three essentials to having long-term healthy relationships: Speaking each other’s love language on a regular basis; dealing effectively with their failures – by apology and forgiveness; and learning to have a healthy response to anger. Get these three in place and you can handle the rest of life much easier.
How have you seen God at work in your work?
What encourages me most is to see couples who admit that they were near divorce until they read The 5 Love Languages or One More Try, or Desperate Marriages and found hope, turned to God and have now restored their marriage. I think of how happy their children must be and how honored God is when we seek His help.
What do you hope readers and DaySpring customers will take away from the You + Me Journal for 2, coupon book, perpetual calendar and love note set (all inspired by The 5 Love Languages)?
I hope that all of these will help people more effectively express love to the important people in their lives.
Do you have a motto, mission statement, or a Scripture that you feel best defines you or your approach to life? What can you tell us about it?
John 15:5 NIV “apart from me you can do nothing:” I am deeply aware that without God, I can do nothing.
Isaiah 41:10: However, He is with me and thus I need have no fear.
What’s next for you? What should we be looking for on the horizon from you in the coming weeks, months or years?
Books, books, and more books.

If we asked for a three-sentence autobiography, what would you write?
Born to Sam and Grace in Kannapolis, NC. Born into the family of God at age 10. The rest has simply been following the path that God had planned for me.
What are your top three moments in life?
Getting married to Karolyn. Becoming a father to Shelley and Derek. Becoming a grandfather to Davy Grace and Elliott.
What does success look like to you?
Success is simply keeping open to whatever God has planned and walking into it every day.
