In her Christian hospitality book Just Open the Door, How One Invitation Can Change a Generation, author Jen Schmidt has set out to reframe how we think about hospitality and to equip us to walk a road of welcome in our daily lives. Jen knows that every time we choose open-door living—whether in our homes or by taking hospitality on the road just like Jesus—those we invite in get to experience the lived-out gospel, our kids grow up in a life-lab of generosity, and we trade insecurity for connection.

Hospitality on the Go

Not only are we commanded to practice hospitality, we do so to bring honor to Jesus and point others to Him. I love the concept of hospitality on the go since that suits my lifestyle better than inviting people into my house. That might involve taking a snack or a light meal to share at the ballfield, conversing with someone you don't know and making them feel valued, taking a meal to someone else, offering to run errands for someone who is sick or recovering from surgery, etc. The study offers a video accompanying each lesson, 3 days of "homework" for each lesson, practical suggestions for putting the lesson into practice, and 7 lessons in the study. Discussion questions following the viewing of the video lend themselves to lively discussions.

"I don't have to _________; I get to."

This book opened my heart up even more to opening my door. Just Open the Door is changing me. This book reminds that “I don’t have to_______; I get to.”

My new favorite

I absolutely loved Jens heart as it poured into this book in every way. Having grown up in Wisconsin farmland, I felt our hearts knit as she shared truth upon truth about the importance of hospitality. Our world is in great need of daily investing in Jesus’ way. My book is highlighted almost completely and I read it in one day. It is very rich, incredibly uplifting, and thoroughly challenging as we are encouraged to love others and open our door and hearts to people. A simple extension of Jesus’ love to others can and will affect them and us. Thank you, Jen, for sharing your heart!
