I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better. EPHESIANS 1:17 NIV

Her alarm pierced the morning silence. She looked at the clock; it took a few minutes to get her bearings. What is today? she wondered in a haze until her memory awakened and she smiled. Ah, it’s Wednesday—the day to have lunch with my grandparents.

Defying the odds, both of her grandparents were in their nineties and were still sharp as a nail. After sixty-five years of marriage, their love for each other seemed sweeter and stronger than ever. In conversation, each helped the other tell their stories seamlessly as if the years had solidified their minds and memories into one. It was a pleasure to witness their unity and love, and to hear their lively stories expressed through their different personalities. She couldn’t help but think that relationally they had struck gold—that precious balance of uniting with one another while retaining individuality.

Relationships like this elderly couple enjoyed are rare, but they reveal a tiny glimpse of the beauty of our great, triune God. Make no mistake; our God is One, as He reminds us throughout His Word. But He also elaborates on the mystery of His nature: He is three in persons. God the Father and Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit are the same in substance yet distinct in roles and expression. They have lived in loving communion from eternity past and now invite us into that incredible fellowship through faith in Christ. In Jesus, we are known by God and fully loved, and His indwelling Spirit links our hearts to His with a power and permanence, unlike any other relationship on earth.

Father, thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to pay the debt for my sins on the cross. Thank You also for sending Your Spirit to live inside me, guiding me ever closer to Your heart. I love being in Your family! In Jesus’s name.
