Where Does Your Hope Come From?
Our relationships.
A new house.
Becoming financially stable.
Elected officials or political parties.
There are so many things we can put our hope in. It’s so tempting to think that whenever that situation is smoothed out, or that promise is fulfilled, or that event has passed… only then, at that time, will everything be ok. But the reality is that having hope in anything besides Jesus holds the chance of letting us down. The paycheck may not stretch far enough. We may become disenchanted with the relationship. The elected officials may disappoint. And the things of this world will rust, tarnish, fizzle and fade.
When we put all of our eggs in the basket of the world, one by one they will break. And by “eggs,” I mean hopes and that which you hold dear. I mean:
» Your heart.
» Your big, huge, God-sized dreams.
» Your family and future.
» Your career.
» Even your finances and possessions.
Each one of these is fragile, easily crushed, and in need of tender care. Maybe it’s easier to hope for fulfillment via the people and things of the world because they’re tangible, visible, promising happiness and satisfaction.
But the love of our Lord? That is forever strong, never disappointing, always present, and eternally faithful. He is an ever-present fortress in our need, and we can place our hope in Him. Just see what He promises us and is able to deliver because of who He is:
Romans 8:24 (CSB): Now in this hope we were saved, but hope that is seen is not hope, because who hopes for what he sees?
When we trust in Him, we can have hope for the really big dreams, the huge goals and seemingly unattainable happy endings. All that which we don’t currently or already have, we can hope for because ‘hope that is seen is not hope.’
1 Corinthians 13:13 (CSB): Now these three remain: faith, hope, and love—but the greatest of these is love.
In unswerving hope, He will direct us on a straight path with sure footing. We can trust Him to come through. Though it may be difficult at first, once we’ve established that trust, placing our deep hope in Him will become easier and more instinctive.
Colossians 1:3-6 (CSB): We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. You have already heard about this hope in the word of truth, the gospel that has come to you. It is bearing fruit and growing all over the world, just as it has among you since the day you heard it and came to truly appreciate God’s grace.
The hope of heaven. Is there anything sweeter?? And the love and faith that only deepen as we hope in Him – these are beautiful, holy, character and countenance builders.
Those fragile pieces of our life and heart need holy protection and care – the kind that can only come from the Lord. And friend – we can trust Him with each and every hope we have.
May we go forth and share this good news with our friends and family! Because, every once in awhile, we all need to be reminded of where our true source of strength, hope and comfort lies. And, ‘may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.’ Romans 15:13 (CSB)
