What Fills Our Minds

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in You. ISAIAH 26:3

It took work on her part. She knew she had to fight against the fears and worries that clouded her thoughts. But sometimes it all just felt like more than she could do on her own. It helped to have a list of God’s promises at the ready. She could turn to them in her Bible, write them on her mirror, and repeat them in her mind as often as needed—like a prescription for hope. She did her best to make her mind a resting place for His truth. And most of the time, it worked.

Our minds are more powerful than we think. What we put in them really matters. And just as importantly, the thoughts we entertain will make their home in our hearts if we let them. We have to be so careful. Lies can act like poison in the water, infecting everything else about us. For example, how do you talk to yourself when you look in the mirror? Are you kind or harsh? If you spoke to your kids or husband, the way you talk to yourself, how would they feel? Do you make a conscious effort to think about things that are true, noble, right, and pure (Philippians 4:8) or do you succumb to slippery sarcasm or slander? Is it gratitude or gossip that fills you up? When you’re intentional about keeping your mind steadfast and faithful, God can fill it with His peace and promises.

God, may my thoughts be reflections of Your promises. In chaos, it’s so easy to lose sight and start allowing anxious thoughts to cloud my mind, but You have given me peace that calms me. May I rest in knowing that You are in control. May I guard my thoughts and not allow the noise to distract me from trusting You.

In Jesus’s name, Amen.
