The Power of Touch

Everyone wanted to touch Jesus because when they did, power emanated from Him and they were healed. (Luke 6:19 The Voice)

Oh, the power of an emanated touch! Jesus represented stability, healing, and belonging with the touch of His hand. The gift of touch differs for each individual. Some prefer a light touch on the hand or shoulder while others prefer a hug or warm embrace. Knowing the art of touch can benefit all relationships. Touch connects humans in a way nothing else really can. Even the world sees touch as a vital part of connection.

Interestingly, Psychology Today states that “When NBA players touch teammates more, they win more.” It makes sense, as it helps them form a strong bond with one another and a sense that they’re all connected.

Sometimes words just aren’t enough. Touch can elicit a response that words can’t.

David Klow, a marriage and family therapist, states, “Non-verbal communication can be a very powerful way to say to your partner, ‘I get you.’ Cuddling is a way of saying, ‘I know how you feel.’ It allows us to feel known by our partner in ways that words can’t convey.”

As humans, we’re designed to be touched. When we form a bond with someone, touch is an integral part of that because when we touch, we don’t just connect on a physical level, we connect on an emotional and psychological level, too.

Charles Dickens said, “Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.”

Tangible Takeaway:

Practice the gift of touching:

  • If you are a parent, practice stroking your child’s hair when they are in your lap.
  • If you are a spouse, practice touch by holding hands or rubbing your spouse’s shoulders, neck, or back.
  • If you are single, practice stroking your pet while reading a book or watching TV. If you have no pet, practice hugging your friend.

The point is to get out of your comfort zone and to be more intentional and emanate the gift of touch.
