The Guide

This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. PSALM 118:24 ESV

Each day is never the same, even when it feels like it is. Sometimes we write our plans in our planners, hoping to cross off our lists. Then we get interrupted by life. Maybe our kids need us or a friend gives us a call or we have to run to the store because there’s just nothing in the house to eat for dinner. It seems as if our days always get disrupted by one thing or another. These changes cause us to become unsettled. We become upset that our day wasn’t as productive as we had initially planned. And instead of focusing on what we did accomplish, we tend to focus on what didn’t get done.

Here’s an idea: every morning, surrender your daily plan to God. Invite Him to create little interruptions, as these can be blessings in disguise. Maybe you’ll run into an old friend while at the store or think of a new business plan while driving or get a call from your friend with wonderful news. Oh! And the kids in your life—whether it be your son or daughter or nephew or niece or grandchildren, remember—they grow up fast! Ask God to provide moments for you to enjoy them. Ask Him to open your eyes today. Even when the sun doesn’t shine, it always comes up. God wants us to be glad in the work He gives us each day; He doesn’t want us to focus on tasks that take away our happiness. Accept the little changes in the day—even the big ones! Grant yourself the freedom and the grace to enjoy each day, however God lays it out for you.

Do you plan out your days before they even start? How do you feel when your plans are interrupted or don’t come through? It’s hard giving up this control, but when we surrender to God’s plans for us, we can ask Him to help us see the joy in each day instead of focusing on our to-do list. Today, why not welcome the little disruptions? And don’t forget to thank God for the day that He made.
