Surrendering Your Plans

Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and He will establish your plans. PROVERBS 16:3 NIV

My favorite prayer to pray is, “If it’s not meant to be, God, take it away.” This is often scary for me to pray because most times, the thing I want is right there in front of me, and I don’t want to let it go. But you know what’s more important to me? That God considers it the right fit. I spent way too many years forcing what I wanted instead of trusting Him.

I remember hunting for a new studio space for my business, All She Wrote Notes. I found a cute house in the town over from us—it was the happiest bright yellow! I met a great mailman (since I run an online business, my shipping partner is one of my most important relationships). But I was ignoring red flags right and left—the price was out of budget, and the house still needed work. Even my contractor dad came to tell me that it wasn’t a wise investment. Blinded by the cuteness, I was determined to forge ahead, but then I prayed my prayer. And God took it away.

With that property off the table, we went to tour the space nearby that I eventually bought. To say it’s a fixer upper is putting it lightly, but it was a low enough price point that I could pay in cash. Plus I was saving a town landmark, it was already a commercial property, AND it had the same mailman! Plus it gave me the opportunity to work construction alongside my dad to build my dream with my own two hands.

God was way ahead of me and saw what a blessing this property could be—to me, to our relationship, and to the town. When I hear a yes from God, it’s like a lot of tiny breadcrumbs line up to make it impossible to ignore. I could list ten signs in a row that could have been written off as coincidences, but since I prayed my prayer, I knew this was the place for me. Is there anything in life you’re wrestling with this week? Try praying my prayer: “If it’s not for me, God, don’t let it be.”
