Piece of Cake

The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him. (Nahum 1:7)

You’re unusually excited this morning. The alarm didn’t even have to sound for your eyes to open wide, your feet ready to hit the floor. In your mind, you know it’s silly, maybe even a little unhealthy. But you saved the last piece of cake for your morning breakfast, and now nothing stands in your way as you relish the idea of one of life’s little indulgences.

A cup of coffee in one hand, fork in the other, the moment does not disappoint. The moist, rich chocolate lights up your taste buds and fills your mind with delight. God, how can anything be so good? you wonder, silently giving thanks to the One who created a world with such deliciousness.

There it is: the sweetest truth of all. God, in his incredible kindness, gave us taste buds. Not only did he give us the ability to taste and smell, but he created all kinds of foods with a myriad of flavors to add mystery, variety, and most of all, pleasure to life. It’s just one more evidence that God, our Creator, is good and kind and generous. And it’s a reminder that he has invited us to taste and see just how good he is. It’s written all through his Word, and it shines all through his world.

God, thank you for giving us so much to enjoy on this earth. You give me so many reasons to smile. I am so grateful. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
