Making Beds

“You’ve made your bed; now lie in it.” Wow. If you’ve ever heard that phrase in one form or another, it was probably not said very kindly and most likely left the “bed maker” feeling quite hopeless. We’ve all had moments when we realized we messed up something big-time, made an irreversible choice, or disappointed someone who expected more of us. It’s an awful feeling to know that we can’t go back and change it, no matter how much we want to. We can remember, though, that human words are not the final words in any matter—God’s Word is. When something happens that others say is hopeless, we can always count on Him to give us hope and help us to find purpose and peace in the midst of it. Yes, we are always called to take responsibility for our actions and seek reconciliation for any hurt we’ve caused. No, we can’t change the consequences of our choices. But unlike those human naysayers, our God has promised to be there to see us through and use every situation for good, no matter what. When others say, “You made your bed . . . ,” He says, “I won’t leave you comfortless” (John 14:18 KJV). And when someone else in our lives stumbles? Let’s be the first ones to offer grace and point them toward the hope we have in Him.

Casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you. —I Peter 5:7 HCSB

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. —I John 1:9 NIV

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. —Romans 15:13 NLT

We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose. —Romans 8:28 HCSB
