Light is Sweet

There is just something about a beautiful day filled with sunshine, isn’t’ there? Especially after multiple days of cold weather. When the weather is dull and dreary, it’s not long before even the optimist’s bones cry out for the warmth that only the sun can provide.

King Solomon said it best in Ecclesiastes 11:7 NIV:

Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.

But what if you’re not feeling the sun and its warmth right now? What if you’re in a season of your life where all you feel is the bitter chill and the darkness settling in your heart? You are not alone. In fact, Solomon understood how this felt.

In the very next verse he says to “remember the days of darkness for there will be many.” That’s the thing about life. Try as we might, we cannot have only days filled with sunshine. That’s why we need a Savior who understands what this feels like. He’s gone through the same days of darkness. The book of Hebrews tells us that He experienced every human emotion – all the pain, all the testing – and would be able to help where help was needed (Hebrews 2:18 CSB). It’s as if He says to us, “I know what it feels like to be alone, betrayed, abandoned, depressed. I’ve experienced every one of these emotions and I get you. You are not alone.”

Because Jesus experienced what we experience on earth, He is truly able to bring us the help we need and the sweetness of light into our darkest day.

So then, we are wise to enjoy the days of sunshine when they come and reach to the light when they’re dark. Light is sweet indeed.

Jesus, we ask You to bring Your sweet light into our dark days and give us wisdom to enjoy the ones filled with sunshine.
