Hitting the Brakes

God, order a peaceful and whole life for us because everything we’ve done, You’ve done for us. ISAIAH 26:11–12 THE MESSAGE

On some days, breathing is enough. You don’t have to accomplish a single thing to prove your worth. You can tuck the lists away, turn off the phone, and feel free to do whatever makes you happy, inspires peace, and settles your soul. Listen for sounds you never stop to hear, look for wonders you never have time to see, and breathe in all the fresh air you need. God, who created all these things, is here, reminding us that it is in Him that we find our infinite worth.

God doesn’t forget how much we need Him, even when we race through our days. The weeks flow together in routine, nonstop motion, and we do the forgetting. He loves us patiently, provides for us faithfully, and paves our paths with inexhaustible grace. His kindness toward us doesn’t change because He doesn’t change, and His love for us is greater than we’ll ever be able to comprehend.

At some point in our hurried, hectic pace, our souls know it’s time to hit the brakes. When that happens, we have to rest and rediscover that all the going and doing doesn’t define us or our worth. God’s definition is the one that holds true and truly matters. He tells us, “You are precious to Me and honored, and I love you” (Isaiah 43:4 TLB). You’re wonderfully, marvelously made by the One who unconditionally and undeniably loves you! Nothing can separate you from God’s love, and nothing in this world can diminish your worth to Him.

Take a day every once in a while to simply enjoy being loved to that magnitude. And when you do, love God back through gratefulness and praise, and peacefully pay attention to the goodness He has placed all around us.

Dear God, I’m humbled by Your unchanging love, undeserved grace, and overwhelming goodness in my life. Remind me to rest in it more often.
