Give Thanks!

Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live. – I Thessalonians 5:16–18 THE MESSAGE

There are times in life when gratitude is overflowing: meeting that special someone, the birth of a new baby, watching your kids grow and succeed, financial success, and seasons where time with Jesus is abundant and rich. But we all know that life inevitably hands us days, weeks, months, and sometimes even years when it’s hard to feel grateful. Illness, financial struggle, marital strife, grief, and so many more obstacles can keep us from experiencing a life of thankfulness—if we allow them to.

As we lean into this topic of gratitude, it’s helpful to look at the words of the psalmists. Over and over, they sing out songs of thankfulness and praise to God. In Psalm 100 we read, “The Lord is good and His love endures forever” (verse 5 NIV). This week, we want to get into the habit of showing gratitude.

I truly believe that a positive mindset can change the whole trajectory of your day, and the best way to infuse positivity into your life is by giving thanks! Psalm 100:3 provides a starting point for us. It gives us a reminder of why we ultimately can give thanks every day. The psalmist wrote, “We are His” (NIV). Start by reminding yourself that you are loved and cared for by God. This week look at your life and do as the psalmists did: give thanks!

Now get out your journal or find a piece of paper, and let’s reflect on a few questions together!

First, get out your Bible and write down Psalm 100:3. Highlight or take note of anything that stands out to you!

This morning I am grateful for:

Think about a challenge you will likely encounter today. Can you find a reason to be grateful for this challenge?

How did you approach challenging moments with gratefulness today?

A “TIP” FROM CANDACE: When I practice saying thank you to others, I find that I live in a more thankful place. Look around for who you can thank this week in big and small ways.
