Found by the Light

Do you remember getting in trouble as a little child? Perhaps you would run and hide, thinking that you could outsmart your parents. You thought, If I can just stay still long enough in the dark closet, maybe they’ll forget about what I’ve done. Yet for some reason that never seemed to work out. The minute you shifted, on came the lights and your hiding self was exposed. How did they know? You were so stealthy…

King David had these very same thoughts. Psalm 139:11-12 (NLT) gives great voice to how deeply our Creator knows us:

I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night – but even in the darkness I cannot hide from You. To You the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to You.

David knew that it was useless to try to hide from the very One who called his being into existence. Because He is light, the darkness could never conceal David from the Lord’s presence.

The same applies to us as children of the light. It is not a place to be scared of, but rather it is the most wonderful and secure place to be. The Lord offers us forgiveness from our mistakes, strength when we feel as if we may fail, and light when our world seems dark and overwhelming.

When we allow ourselves to be found by the light, we are privy to all His benefits, just as cherished children are secure in their homes. It’s a home filled with His presence and His light.

Lord, help us to see that the darkness never offers us the same benefits as being found by the light. You are a good Father to us.
