Food for Thought

“The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” – John 6:33 NLT

You can search the Bible from cover to cover and never find the diet to end all diets. There’s no one right way to eat or a way to get the perfect balance of what your body needs from the pages of Scripture.

When we search the Bible for guidance about food, what we find is wisdom that drives us toward satisfaction in what God gives and leads us to trust that He’ll give us enough. For example, if I have one cookie, it’s great, but when I have several cookies, I wind up feeling sluggish or have a tummy ache. I guess what they say is true—all things are better in moderation.

I believe the Bible helps us find moderation and purpose in why we eat. In Psalm 107 the psalmist reminds us of God’s unfailing love for us. Our good Father “satisfies the thirsty” and “fills the hungry with good things.”

Today, I want to challenge you to reflect on how much God loves you in the way He provides for you. Or, here’s an idea: why not try thinking of food as something that satisfies and fills you? Use food as a daily reminder of your dependence on God to provide for you and your need to be filled and satisfied by Him!

Now get out your journal or find a piece of paper, and let’s reflect on a few questions together!

First, get out your Bible and write down Psalm 107:9. Highlight or take note of anything that stands out to you!

How do you feel about tackling the topic of food this week?

What is your overall outlook on food? Do you see it as a way God provides for your body—a way to satisfy, nourish, and strengthen you? Why or why not?

After day one, what did you notice about your food choices and how they fill you?

What changes (if any) will you make for tomorrow?

A “TIP” FROM CANDACE: Eat with mindfulness. Think about how the food makes you feel. When you do this, you might discover that some types of food make you come alive and feel truly satisfied!

ACTIVITY: Reflect on how thinking about food today made a difference.
