Early in January this year, my wife Shirley and I received the terrible news of our son’s tragic death. His community planned a memorial service for him, and we wanted very much to attend.

Each night I went to the promise box, and we were comforted with these scriptures: “The Lord upholdeth all that fall” Psalm 145:14a, “Fear not: for I am with thee.” Isaiah 43:5a, “Sorrow is turned into joy before Him.” Job 41:22b, “My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.” Exodus 33:14.

The memorial service was to be held about 200 miles away. The weather was very cold with snow falling every day. The drive there climbed a 5600 foot mountain, then through a valley, and then up through a 4000 foot pass. The roads were compacted snow “with slippery sections”. That night the scripture was “He shall give his angels charge concerning thee.” Matthew 4:6b. We didn’t slip. There were scars on the roadside where cars had gone off into the snowbank. One car was being towed out. One was still there. We arrived home safely in the evening.

That night the scripture was “The Lord shall give thee rest from thy sorrow.”

These scriptures were all taken out randomly.

My mother is 76 years old. My daughter has very fond memories of her. My mother even lived with us for awhile and kept my children afterwards until we moved. Recently, my daughter told her that she wanted one thing from her and to make sure she put it in the will for her to receive. My mother not having any idea what that "one thing" was, speculated on many items until my daughter said, 'The Daily Bread Box, Mamma. She told my mother that the greatest gift she could give her was that little old box that had been in our family since I was a little girl. Shawna had great memories of reading from that box just like "mommy use to". My daughter just recently married and my mother presented her with that worn out Daily Bread Box. My daughter cried. She said that was the best gift of all. Now she and her husband can carry on that morning devotion time.

What a blast from the past to see the “Our Daily Bread” Promise Box on your site! I am a church administrator now, but when I was a little girl and daughter of a pastor, that little loaf of bread held a place of honor on our kitchen table. We four children could barely wait until we could read well enough to take our turn reading the messages on the colored cards. We always followed the reading with a prayer. Those little messages of inspiration laid the foundation for our devotional lives. What a valuable family resource!

A few years ago my beloved father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and given only a few weeks to live. His children, including myself, who mostly lived at a distance, all met on a certain day to be together once again as a family for one of the last times. We made a special dinner, though Dad could eat little, we set the patio with special dishes and flowers-I reached back into an old cupboard to get a vase from the old days, and here I found the Bread of Life, that we had faithfully passed around and read at the supper table all the while growing up. That evening, we each picked a verse, and without a doubt, EVERY verse was specifically suited for the person reading it. I remember Dad's verse was, "That in the ages to come, He might show the exceeding riches of His grace", Titus, and mine was, "Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.." I had been sharing with everyone that every day we need to pray and be thankful for everything we could in whatever the circumstances, and not give in to self-pity. One by one we read our little verses, and felt the Lord's presence with us..our joy in being together once again as a family, was cemented by reading these verses from our old Bread of Life. My Dad passed away shortly after, with his family surrounding him, and we know that now he is in the fullness of joy. "Absent from the body, present with the Lord,", "In Thy presence is fullness of joy."

Before I was a Christian, a friend talked me into going to a Christian fellowship with her. I was literally scared to death to go be around Christians as I knew nothing about them. Of course, I hid my fear by acting defiant and bored and probably ruined any possiblity of my friend having a good time that night. However, someone at the fellowship passed around the Our Daily Bread loaf, and everyone randomly picked one out. I'll never forget what mine said: "Fear not little flock, for it is the father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." It shook me up, though I didn't show it. It definately planted a seed in my heart and I came to the Lord within the year.

Many years ago, in the beginning of my divorce, I was very concerned about my children. I didn't know how in the world I would be able to raise them alone. About that same time my sister was preparing the arrangements to getting married and she had asked me to go with her to the local Christian book store. My heart was so burdened with my concerns over the children that I was in no mood to go anywhere, but nevertheless she convinced me. As I was there in the book store I strolled down one of the aisles and I happen to see, "Our Daily Bread" promise box. I said a prayer under my breath, "God I need to hear from you, help me with my children......" , with that prayer in my mind, I closed my eyes and I picked a little card. The card said, "All your sons will be taught by the Lord, and great shall be there peace" Isaiah 54:13.

I was overwhelmed with HIS love and protection! I felt peace in my heart that all would be well. My children are all grown now, but to this day I still have that promise written in several places throughout my house, as well as that little promise box in our house, reminding me daily of his constant love and concern for our needs.

Over 25 years ago, as a young Christian, I bought "Our Daily Bread" and kept it on the kitchen table. One day, my husband, who was not a Christian (at the time), wanted me to go to a movie that I felt was not right for me to see. I was torn between "submitting" and rejecting his offer.

It seems like yesterday, as I prayed I pulled out one of the scripture cards and laughed as I read the verse. "Those cards tell jokes too?", he asked.

The scripture was, "Even as I sit in darkness, thy light shall be round about me."

God often used them to encourage me with just the right Word.

I remember each of my siblings taking a turn picking a card and reading the verses at the dinner table. I loved it when it was my turn. I came across the old daily bread holder (it was made of wood back then) and the verse cards while visiting my parent's home a few years back. I fondly read through them while recalling those dinner readings and the ensuing discussion. God spoke to me through those verses years ago and played a part in my spiritual formation. Now that I am pastoring I'm grateful for the small part Our Daily Bread played in my life.

The little loaf of Bread was in my great grandmas home in Spring City, Tennessee. Her name is Fairy and she died many years ago. I don't know what ever happened to the 'Ouir Daily Bread' cards. Before she gave me my first Bible, I heard the words of Jesus through the cards in 'the little bread'. As a child, I found the 'bread' and the multi-colored cards to be just my size and I loved it! Thinking of the fact that Jesus Himself had said the words she read to me was awe inspiring to me. I now have my own children and I think that the cards are still just my size, and theirs as well! I had not thought of them in so many years and now I think back fondly on those times and plan to get the cards for my family.

My parents had a promise box way before I even had one. About 38 yrs. ago, I had one on my kitchen table and we were waiting for my husband's pay check to come in. I had no money to buy milk for my baby and hated to have to ask my parents for milk money. Somehow, my baby knocked the "Our Daily Bread" box, and Praise God, there was $5.00. I had enough for milk and money to spare for other things. This was in 1964.

In 1950 when I was in kindergarten, my Father was diagnosed with bone cancer in his finger. The morning after his diagnosis, my Mother took out her little promise from the little "Our Daily Bread" box, which read, "I am the Lord Thy God that healeth thee." They clung to that promise. My Father had his finger removed, and was anointed with oil by the elders in the church, and he was miraculously healed. He has had no reoccurance of cancer since then. What a faithful promise from a faithful God. I didn't know these little boxes were still available. I will purchase one for myself and for my Father, who is now 91, and my Mother who is now 86. Thank you for keeping this little promise box in print. You say it is celebrating 50 years, but this story happened 55 years ago.

The bread box - daily devotion scriptures were for me, as a child growing up, the item I so looked forward to each day as we would gather together as a family for the evening meal! 'Before' or 'following' the meal, we would make a further connection through devotions together with one of the seven of us taking our turn to read the scripture chosen for the day! Thanks for making this memory so special for me and for my family!
I am nearly 53 now and as a pastors wife I'm using scripture daily in my own life! God has given me the strength and the promises to go on, even in the face of some of the greatest pains and losses! In 1990, my husband, our two remaining children and I experienced our oldest daughter being swept to Heaven after a short battle with melanoma cancer! We were able to witness the strength she held to at only 12 years of age, of her own daily relationship with God through her knowledge and love of the scriptures!
May God always and forever be given our praise!

I used to clean house for a little old ,crippled up lady named Frieda. She was 87 years young and was such an inspiration to me. She had a little loaf of bread ,with Bible scriptures in it which sat on her coffee table. Once a week when i moved it to dust, i'd find myself drawing out the little cards to read. When we shared lunch we'd each take a turn and each read one of the little cards. We talked about how good the Lord was as we ate.I found myself wishing that i too could find a Bread of Life promise box. She told me how hard her life had been ,raising a family during the great depression ,but God was always there, helping her and her family to get through it. She said kind neighbors assisted one another by sharing food when food was scarce. Frieda shared with me how wonderful her life was because Christ was the center of it! She taught Sunday school and never missed a church service, even when she became very frail. She passed away one day and her testimony will stay with me always. She always said she wasn't afraid to die..after all , she was just leaving one place, dropping off an old tired , broken down body and going to a far better place and picking up a brand new ,glorified body on the way !She taught me that growing old can be done with grace with glad rejoiceing of the coming attractions in going "home" She longed to see her Savior and all the Saints in Heaven and also her family and friends again. She never complained of how hard life had become for her...only shared praises of what good things came her way, through Christ Jesus!
