Press Release – “Our Daily Bread” Promise Box Still a Best-Seller After Fifty Years

DaySpring Employees Share Their Stories of the Our Daily Bread Promise Box:

Family Treasure

Emily McClain is a product manager for greeting cards at DaySpring. She recalls: “My grandparents live in the small town of Noxapater, Mississippi. The whole family (cousins, aunts, uncles, etc.) would get together at their house for lunch on Sundays after church. My grandmother, whom we call ‘Mama Kat, had the little bread box on a shelf full of knick-knacks above the kitchen table. It looked like a little loaf of bread. My grandparents made it a special honor for one of the grandkids to read the Scripture card before lunch and then say the blessing. We took turns. When it was my turn I always chose a red Scripture card to read because red was my favorite color. That little bread box is a family treasure.”

Solid As Their Marriage

Don Davis, an account executive with DaySpring, wrote: “We received the bread box as a wedding gift 42 years ago. We used it regularly with our children during their growing-up years. It sat on our dining table. The kids took turns sitting at the head of the table and reading a Scripture at the evening meal. We wore out the original cards, and my wife made a new set by hand-writing verses on construction paper, which we still have. Our children are now grown and have families of their own. Our grandkids now enjoy reading the Scriptures.”

Start the Day

Jan Goff is the legal manager at DaySpring. Over thirty-five years ago, her family kept the Our Daily Bread Promise Box on the table at their home in Indiana. She remembers: “Each morning as the family gathered for breakfast, my mother or father would read a Scripture from it and say the prayer. It was a neat way to start the meal and the day together. It also made my family’s Christianity very real every day, not just on Sundays.”

Clipping Beans and Reading Scriptures

Laura Cannon is a retail technical administrator in the Information Services department at DaySpring. She shares the following story about the Our Daily Bread Promise Box in her family that they called the “little loaf of bread with messages from Jesus.”

“No matter where we lived while I was growing up, I remember the six of us all piling into our big blue van and heading for Grandma’s house in Arkansas. As soon as we’d pull into Grandma’s drive-way it was like an airplane landing. Mom and Dad would insist that we all stay in our seats with our seatbelts on until they stopped in front of the house. After so much anticipation and such a long ride, we’d all jump out of the van and head towards the door. Grandma would open up the door and before she could say anything we’d yell, ‘Hi Grandma!’ and head for the kitchen. This is what we’d been waiting for! There on the kitchen table just waiting for us would be a number of large bowls full of green beans and the little bitty loaf of bread with different colored cards in it. We’d all dig in to the bowls of beans and start clipping ends off for canning. When we were done with each bowl, we got to read one of the little cards. The little cards were messages from Jesus and, along with clipping beans, were the highlight of our visit!

Little did I know that one day I would end up living in Siloam Springs, Arkansas and working at the very same place that created the little loaf of bread with the messages from Jesus! And you know what else? About three years ago when my parents were here visiting we went up to my Grandma’s old house. We had received word from one of my aunts that the roof was leaking and was now starting to cave in and that soon nothing left in the house would be recoverable. We went up to the house to see if there was anything left that was salvageable and among a lot of old china and dishware, guess what we found? Yup… the little loaf of bread with messages from Jesus! After all those years, it was still there and in pretty good shape. Now that little loaf of bread sits in my Mom’s china cabinet so my family can celebrate Jesus and all our fond memories of our trips to Grandma’s!”
