Waiting On The Lord
When my wife and I were newly married we spent several months living in a couples dormitory at the Bible college we had graduated from a year earlier. I had returned to finish a class I needed to take in order to receive my diploma…
One Sunday evening we were in our room writing letters. After we each completed a letter we realized that we didn’t have any stamps. At that time first class postage was a nickel. “All we need is ten cents,” I told my wife, “Let’s look around the room and see if we can come up with it.”
We looked in the drawers, in our pants pockets, and in her purse. After our search was over we had managed to round up nine pennies. “All we need now is one penny,” I responded, “I’ll just go down the hall and borrow a penny from one of my friends. A penny should be an easy thing to borrow.” A few moments later I approached the door of one of my friends. As I was about to knock, the still small voice of God’s Spirit spoke to my heart, “Don’t borrow the penny, trust Me for it instead.” I returned to our room and told my wife of my decision not to borrow the penny, but to trust the Lord to provide it for us instead…
A few minutes later I stepped out into the dorm hallway and ran into one of the married students who had just returned from a trip downtown. We chatted for about five minutes and throughout our visit I noticed that he kept playing with something between his fingers. When our conversation was over I asked him out of curiosity what it was that he had between his fingers. “Oh this,” he answered, “It’s just a penny. Here.” And with that he flipped the penny in the air and into my palm. I stood there in amazement, gazing at that penny. I held the coin between my fingers and walked into our room. When my wife looked at me, I lifted the hand that held the penny and showed it to her. We stood there overcome by the care of God for us, realizing that He loved us so much that He would even provide a penny. In such a simple and clear way God showed us to trust Him–not only for the big things in our lives, but also for the little things–down to the smallest detail.
“...The Lord...remains faithful forever.”
PSALM 146:6 NIV
