Getting to know Roy Lessin
One of the Editorial staff recently spoke at a Christian Writers’ Conference and told a story about Roy. After class, one of the students came up and said, “You know Roy Lessin! I thought he was like Charles Spurgeon or Charles Finney. I didn’t know he was still alive. I love his writings!” Roy certainly is alive and well here at DaySpring! He keeps the Editorial office alive with his quick wit and inspirational e-mail quotes he sends us. His office décor is a highlight of tours through DaySpring. He loves “antiquing” and “flea marketing,” whether it’s online or in a quaint shop he’s discovered. He often seems to bless others with his unique finds!
Roy is from a Jewish family and came to know Jesus as his Messiah when he was nineteen years old. The story of Roy and his family is told in the book Gone the Golden Dream. In 1961, Roy attended Bethany College of Missions in Minneapolis. It was there that he met his wife, Charlene. Roy was commissioned as a missionary and received his ordination from Bethany Missionary Church. After graduation, he was a Christian Education director in Oakland, California. He also spent several years doing missionary work in Mexico and Puerto Rico. Roy continues to teach in several home groups.
In 1971, Roy, along with three other Christian businessmen, founded DaySpring Cards. He has been the senior writer for the past thirty years. Roy has written several books for children, two books on child training, several devotional books and thousands of Christian greeting cards. His writings have literally touched millions of lives throughout the world.
Roy has been called many things—“man of God,” “founder,” “senior writer,” “mentor,” “counselor,” “teacher,” “missionary,” etc. Our favorite name for Roy, though, is simply “friend.”
